Solomon Radasky was born in Warsaw, Poland, on May 17, 1910. He worked in the Praga district of Warsaw with the family business of making fur coats. He had 2 brothers, 3 sisters, and a mother and father who lived in the same area as Solomon. He remembers that whenever a Jewish holiday came in his town, the stores closed for the day and everyone celebrated the Jewish holiday. In his early 30’s, the Nazis began to force many Jewish families, along with the Radasky family, into the newly established ghettos.
In December 1939, Poland was being torn apart by the savagery of the Holocaust. Oskar Schindler took his first faltering steps from the darkness of Nazism towards the light of heroism. “If you saw a dog going to be crushed under a car,” he said later of his wartime actions, “wouldn't you help him?” Poland had been a relative haven for Jewish people and it numbered over 50,000 people, but when Germany invaded, destruction began immediately and it was very harsh. Jews was forced into crowded ghettos, randomly beaten and humiliated, and continuously murdered for no reason.

Hitler has just risen to power in the economically and politically unstable Germany, and he has rearmed the nation for supreme power. Hitler’s invasion of Poland drives Great Britain and France to declare war, and over the next six years, conflict will take more lives and property than the war before. Soon, the Soviet Union and the United States will join in against the diabolic leader of Germany. As part of Hitler’s “Final Solution,” also known as the Holocaust, six million Jews are murdered in concentration camps along with Soviet Union prisoners, the homeless, alcoholics, gypsies, and other ethnic minorities.
Buergenthal tells a story that is not similar to Elie Wiesel, although they tell of the same event. This book is not intended to expose the horrors of the camps, but to rather show how a child was able to conquer all those horrors and come out on the other side, willing to stand up for anything that seems unjust. Did you know Otto Frank was the sole survivor of the Holocaust within the group hidden in the annex, he displayed leadership within the annex when things were tough and he survived WWI. Even after surviving so much, he did not come out unscathed. He was a survivor because he survived WWI, he survived the Holocaust, and showed leadership in the annex and still carried on. Starting with the rumors of a German invasion to the Polish Army draft, the occupation of Poland, the establishment of the Ghetto, the resettlement and execution of the Jewish population, the Jewish resistance and eventually the fall of the German Army to the Communist Soviet Union; which they, the Polish Jews, welcomed with open arms. All the while, Mr. Szpilman never retracted from his will and determination to maintain his presence in
