“The ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative.” This quote directly represents and defines what the American Dream is - and that is the dream of achieving a your goals and becoming successful in a legitimate way. And by using this reason one can deduct that Jay Gatsby did not infact achieve the American Dream. He may have been rich, but that is not all to the American Dream. To achieve the American Dream you must accomplish all your goals in life and he did not do that. His main goal was to win over Daisey. While reading through the book one can realize the reason on why Gatsby wanted to become rich, and that reason was because he wanted to win over Daisey. He realized that the only way to win over Daisy would be wealth, so after the war he strived and become extremely wealthy. He eventually did this by selling illegal alcohol through the chains of drug stores. Daisy and Gatsby were lovers, but under circumstances their courting ended, leaving Gatsby in a trance. This whole book shows the struggle that Gatsby goes through just to be with the woman who he thinks truly loves him, but in reality that is not the case. Daisey has gotten married to another man and even has child with him, which further consummates their marriage.
