General Petraeus Mosul Laws and Operations In 2003, General Petraeus rapidly took control of Mosul, a city in northern Iraq, with the 101st Airborne Division due to his vast experiences. His knowledge, expertise, and experience with operational environments from previous missions, lent strong power to complete the mission successfully. Petraeus’ keen understanding of the operational variables: political, economic, diplomatic, and information; effectively reestablished law and order to Mosul, by reinstating security, restoring government, and activating the economy. His efforts were essential in rebuilding the society and returning the city to normalcy. Petraeus knew the importance and relevance of Mosul as a center of gravity for establishing security. Mosul had been the headquarters for the Iraqi Fifth Corps and held an honored military heritage. The General, along with his staff, recognized the need for an election to establish a new government. He would need to rely on his Colonel Hatch, his Staff Judge Advocate, to help facilitate the process. Colonel Hatch and his team used their skills to provide guidance to accomplish the mission based on their experiences in Bosnia and Haiti. Due to their indefatigable efforts, Mosul held an election on May 5, 2003.
