Henry Ford was born in Greenfield Township, Michigan on July 30, 1863. Ford’s parents William Ford and Mary Litogot Ford owned a family farm. Henry’s mother died while he was only 15 years old. At that time Henry’s father, William Ford, wanted Henry to eventually take over the family farm. But Henry admitted that wasn’t what he wanted to do. He only said he loved the family farm for the sake of his mother who was now dead. At the young age of 16 Henry moved away from home to Detroit city where he started working as a beginner machinist. Henry started out working for James F. Flower. Three years later Ford moved back home and was hired by Westinghouse Company for steam engine service, while also studying bookkeeping at Goldsmith, Bryant and Stratton Business College in Detroit. “Ford’s innovative vision of mass production would not only produce the first reliable, affordable “automobile for the masses,” but would also spark a modern industrial revolution.” Ford started out by creating a “Quadricycle”, it was basically two bicycles placed next to one another and powered by a gasoline engine. Ford used racing to gain recognition for his cars and his name. Ford’s racing worked! He acquired the supporters he needed to begin Ford Motors Co. Ford then designed and produced the Model A. Ford Motors started out in 1903 and by 1904, Ford had sold 500 Model A’s. “While most other automakers were building luxury-laden automobiles for the wealthy, Ford had a different vision.” Ford’s only concern was to create a reliable car that everyone could afford. Henry succeeded when he created the Model T. The Model T was reliable and cheaper to make that the Model A. The Model T went on the market in 1908 and was an instant success.
