Out of India, Japan, and China, Japan has made the most progress after World War II. Progress is defined by Merriam-Webster’s dictionary as “the process of improving or developing something over a period of time”. Japan has made the most progress on several levels and has achieved parity with the United States and Europe. These levels include social, political, and technological, aspects of today’s Japanese society. Before and during WWII, Japan was a very militaristic, monarchical, and nationalistic society. Militarism was glorified and introduced to young children who would be future soldiers, nurses, and house wives. Japan has come a long way since those times and has made significant progress. While there were some aspects of a Democracy before WWII, the hard and soft power rested on the Emperor. Politics was also dominated by the wealthy and family of the Emperor and the military during WWII. Following the war, Japan was occupied by the United States and a Constitutional Monarchy was established. Like the monarchy of Great Britain, the monarch of Japan would only have ceremonial duties. The true change was the democratic government that was established and the constitution that made it possible. In comparison to the constitution of pre-WWII Japan, this new constitution no longer considered its people as subjects but as citizens. The government no longer served at the behest of an Emperor but for the people its leaders represent. While India was not independent and its own autonomous government, it did have democracy albeit under British rule. Progress in the representation of its people through democracy and its adaptation is quite impressive. What is also impressive is the progress Japan has been able to achieve
