Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy but moved to Florence shortly after. He was an Italian painter, architect, poet, and most famously a sculptor. It all started when Michelangelo became an apprentice to a painter before studying in the sculpture gardens of the powerful Medici family. His works include the David and Pieta statues and the ceiling paintings of Rome's Sistine Chapel, including the Last Judgment. Michelangelo always considered himself to be a Florentine, but lived most of his life in Rome. While attending school he did meet a friend by the name of Francesco Granacci. Francesco introduced Michelangelo to painter Domenico Ghirlandaio who needed an apprentice. Michelangelo's father finally agreed to apprentice him, at the age of 13, to the well-known Florentine painter's workshop but not before Michelangelo’s father and his uncle Francesco beat the young Michelangelo in an effort to change his mind. He looks almost has if he has fallen asleep, not been the victim of a violent execution. When the sculpture was finished there were complaints against Michelangelo because of the way he depicted Mary.
