Burke’s use of allusion, organization, and tone are the strategies Burke used to persuade Wall Street to include all the heros that served in

The film’s ethos, pathos, and logos all contribute to persuasion, as the poster forces a determination regarding interest in the upcoming film. I will discuss the poster for The Wolf of Wall Street and how it uses each rhetorical device as a means to establish the tone and setting for the film. A film’s ethos focuses on certain actors, directors, and production companies with loyal fanbases. An actor, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, has the ability to drive up a film’s success at the box office, simply by attaching his name to the poster.
Films on the big screen often reflect the morals and values of modern society. In the film, The Wolf of Wall Street, the main character Jordan Belfort, is basically a greed incarnate. Jordan is a con man who has extraordinary sales pitching skills and uses them to lure wealthy investors making worthless investments. The reason Jordan is able to build his shady empire on Wall Street almost overnight is his high commissions on the stocks he sells. No matter how much money Jordan made, his greed could never be satisfied.
Sean Soko is a TikTok influencer who recently gained popularity after posting a video eating spicy wings and rubbing his eyes on January 26th, 2024. The video garnered 1.6 million likes and 8.4 million views. Sean Soko uses his social media account on TikTok to gain followers through formulaic engagement while, in contrast, his other social media accounts such as YouTube and Instagram, focus on a more personalized outlook of who Sean is. This contrast between the type of content and the engagement with such content is that the persona creators choose to perform vastly influences the popularity they might get versus the popularity of the content they are producing. Beginning with content he produced before his “viral” video, he had 34 videos between the years of 2019 and up to his popular TikTok.
The reception for “The Wolf of Wall Street” was mixed. While it was a box office success, quadrupling its $100 million budget and receiving five Oscar nominations, it was met with a lot of criticism. Jim Cullen argues that Scorsese tacitly endorses this “corrupt version of the American Dream”. He cites the scene where Jordan says, “This is Ellis Island, dear people. I don’t care who you are or where you’re from, whether your relatives came over on the fucking Mayflower or an inner tube from Haiti.

Further progressing we are plunged into the early life of Jordan Belfort fresh out of college ready to tackle the World. From Jordan’s beginning as a penny stock trader to starting his brain child Stratton Oakmont. Growing his firm from seven very unqualified sleazy salesman to his empire of lies where he sells penny stocks with 50% as high quality stocks such as Disney and Microsoft to make a quick 49 million a year.
