Before Escobar stepped into the drug business, cocaine was mainly smuggled into the US by suitcases lined with cocaine, or smuggled in small amounts by commercial fishers and trawlers.(Green) By 1985, Escobar was able to export 4000 kilograms of cocaine into the US annually. He did this by creating new routes through poverty stricken countries including Haiti and Panama. He did this by creating new techniques of smuggling cocaine in larger quantities with better security aversion. Some of these methods created by Escobar include mixing cocaine into Guatemalan fruit pulp, Ecuadorian cocoa, Chilean wine and Peruvian dried fish. The cocaine in these items would be removed and salvaged by chemists hired by Escobar in the US.(Green) Escobar would also smuggle larger amounts of cocaine into the US by tapping into commercial cargo shipments replacing the liners of refrigerators and filling tv sets with cocaine. Escobar was also able to buy a private island named Normans Cay. He used this island as a refueling station for planes smuggling cocaine into the US. Because of this, he took various precautions to prevent his extradition, as well as others in Colombia. One of these methods was to put hits and bounties on his enemies. One example of when he did this was on Javier Peña and Steve Murphy. These were two DEA members who were hot on Escobar’s trail and eventually assisted in his death. Escobar had put a $300,000 USD on each of their heads. This was a small town hitman's dream, and although no one ever reached them, it caused lots of turmoil and discomfort among the agents.(Green) Another time Escobar used assassinations and bounties on his enemies was when he called a kidnapping on the Attorney General of Colombia, Carlos Hoyos. Hoyas was later found on the side of a different road, dead. While no proof was ever confirmed speculation is that Hoyas was killed because of his strong urge to allow extradition.(Long) This meant that Escobar most likely killed him to set back the push on allowing extradition to the US.
Although Escobar was a drug lord, he acted as a sort of philanthropist towards the city of Medellin. He did this by donating millions of dollars from his personal fortune towards building stadiums, hospitals, homes and more. Along with these large donations, Escobar sponsored many sports teams jerseys and equipment.(Biography). However, Escobar did gained from these donations widely in the beginning of his reign.
