In addition to advancements in math, ancient Greeks also made vast strides in the area of medicine. Hippocrates, a Greek physician during the Age of Pericles, is regarded as one of the most meritorious figures in the history of medicine. (Document 4)One of the oldest binding documents in history, the Hippocratic oath, requires new physicians to swear, upon the healing gods,
Still, Plato’s full psychological theory is much more complicated than the basic division of persons would suggest. First, there are different kinds of appetitive attitudes (558d–559c, 571a–572b): some are necessary for human beings; some are unnecessary but regulable (“lawful”), and some are unnecessary and entirely uncontrollable (“lawless”). So there are in fact five kinds of pure psychological constitutions: aristocratically constituted persons (those ruled by their rational attitudes), timocratically constituted persons (those ruled by their spirited attitudes), oligarchically constituted persons (ruled by necessary appetitive attitudes), democratically constituted persons (ruled by unnecessary appetitive attitudes), and tyrannically constituted
In the book Inside the Criminal Mind by Stanton Samenow, the idea that criminals commit crimes because of the environment or mental illness is an undying speculation. For instance, in the song “Gee, Officer Krupke” excuses are a thrown out for bad behavior, “delinquents were punks because their dads were drunks. They’re misunderstood rather than no good” (41). The juvenile's behavior is look at as more of a psychological or sociological problem than an actual crime. Adversities in life are unavoidable, these everyday struggles can be looked at as motivation or degradation.
The final argument of Plato’s Phaedo was created to prove souls cannot perish. Plato does so by arguing how a soul cannot die nor cease to exist on the same fundamental grounds of how the number three can never be even. For the number three holds the essence of being odd, without being odd entirely. Similarly, a soul holds the essence of life through immortality, however the soul is not immortal itself and only participates in immortality, just as the number three participates in being odd. Additionally, an essence or form cannot admit to the opposite of itself just as small cannot be large simultaneously, and hot cannot be cold.

What– according to Gilgamesh, Hammurabi, Plato, Thucydides, Confucius, and the Koran– makes a good society? Thanks to the long lasting scriptures of these ancient thinkers and rulers, today, we are fortunate to be given the knowledge to understand the thoughts of sages; who lived thousands of years before us. Through myths, poetry and legal codes, these wise men express their philosophy on what it takes to create a good society. It is evident in all the texts, a presence of a Supreme Being or “God”, who dictates to the people how to behave, along with its respective consequences.

Aryan Zaveri Mrs. Schmidt Period 1 2 December 2016 Abortion Abortion has been a controversial topic that has caused divisions within our countries for a long time now. Many people are pro-life, they believe that performing an abortion on an unborn baby is the equivalent of murder, and should not be legal. Period. On the other hand, we have people that are pro-choice--they believe that since women are the ones that have to carry around what’s basically a parasite in their body for nine months and then care for it, they should be able to choose whether or not they actually want to have the child. Back and forth, back and forth.
In life there are many misconceptions, people look at something and automatically make a mental note of what it is and what they think about it. Whether they are correct or not an opinion has been formed, and in order to find the truth, they must be willing to open their mind to all possibilities. Not everyone will be willing to change their opinion on something so it ultimately comes down to convincing them of your theory or changing your ways. In the stories The Allegory of the Cave by Plato and Black Men and Public Space by Brent Staples, you will see how the individual deals with people’s misconceptions about themselves.
1 What is the moral of Plato’s story of the Ring of Gyges? Is he correct in his basic assumption? The moral of Plato’s story is that when a person has the opportunity to be unjust they will be unjust. If there were no laws people would act in unjust ways and I would tend to agree with this train of thought.
Deviance has many functions in society. Although deviance violates social norms, without it, we would not have rules, so it helps form, guide, and shape society’s norms and goals. Social norms are different from culture to culture. Norms that may be acceptable in one culture may be frowned upon in another. Emile Durkheim quotes that “deviance and deviant behavior is an integral part of all healthy societies (Adler, 2014, p74).”

1 INTRODUCTION Power and authority are the most important aspects of politics as such way of thinking comes a long way from the earliest thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle to mention few. They are the fundamental features of state in politics, focusing on who should have the power and authority over the people and who should rule them. During the time prior and after the birth of states, political authority has always been a major concern with regards to who should rule and how and who shouldn’t. Therefore this issues need to be addressed in a way that will at the end benefit the society. Plato is the thinker or theorist who came with addressing who should rule in a political environment in what Plato outlined that only Philosophers should rule.
“Plato’s philosophy is an attempt to justify Socrates’ belief in the objectivity of moral virtues.” As one of Socrates’ most loyal disciples, Plato’s own philosophy was heavily influenced by Socrates’ own thoughts and teachings. Much of Plato’s philosophy is a direct extension of some of the questions Socrates posed, i.e., Socrates asked what justice is, and Plato explored this question in his own writings. It is Socrates’ code of ethics, however, that most closely corresponds with Plato’s ethics.
