During the European Renaissance, 1300-1600, many forms of art significantly changed. For example, Medieval art was mainly based on religion without perspective, but in the Renaissance, paintings became more personal and made better use of shadows and light. An important figure in the development of the art was Rembrandt van Rijn through his unique creativity. He was a painter and printmaker who owned an art gallery and was taught by Pieter Lastman, who was famous for his paintings depicting hell.
