When Robert Smalls and many other slaves escaped from the CSS planter to Philadelphia, they found their way into freedom. Since then, Robert Smalls has left a legacy and presence being the most influential African American in his era. But before we start, we have to know what the civil war was. The Civil War was a battle of the South vs the North and this was all about the fact that Abraham Lincoln was trying to stop slavery. Then this is when the South decided to leave the Union and become the Confederate States of America. And then this is when the North (union) realized that this was going to become a real problem. Robert Smalls fought in 17 major battles in the Civil War and was the pilot of many ships, airplanes and jets. He would get his reputation from his knowledge of seeing the ocean and sea, but also for his unique battle strategy. Robert Smalls was most known for his escape on Charleston's ship with 16 other slaves. Many people would say that Fredrick Douglas contributed more to ending slavery and the civil war than Robert Smalls. My evidence says “Douglass became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, during which he gained fame for his oratory and incisive anti-slavery writing.” This got Abraham’s attention and this adventure got Abraham Lincoln attention and led to him making the 13th amendment. But Robert did end slavery, but in different ways like getting slaves to fight in the civil war and this would give them an advantage to end the war. In the end yes, Friedrick Douglas did more things to end slavery but I think that Robert Smalls did more in the war situation and tried to win the war.
