However, it became clear that all these elements were present in some way in ancient Greek art.6 This is important because it shows how the Romans did not invent this type of art themselves, but this type of art was around before they came. Ancient Romans have contributed many important elements to western civilization. They created a legacy that proved to be as dominant as it was long lasting and many Roman principles are embodied in their modern instructions. The Romans made varies of contributions to the Western Civilization, but a few are the most important of all. Bathing was a major part of ancient Roman culture and society. The act of bathing was developed to be one of the most common daily activities and was practiced within all social classes.
The Greeks had great influence over Roman art and architecture. The romans took Greek ideas and modified and incorporated them. The romans adapted Grecian columns but added a separate base and ornamentation. They liked Corinthian columns because of their extravagant designs.
With Etruscan influence, the Romans began building with enthusiasm, combining columns, arches and various styles of vaults into their homes, temples, and Colosseum. Although the Romans impact on architecture spread throughout Europe and the United States, nothing is as magnificent as the Romans development of concrete and its use for constructing walls, theaters, and those beautifully graceful bridges. The Egyptians were the first civilization to create a type of concrete by mixing together mud and straw and forming them into bricks around 5000 BC. The greeks discovered volcanic ash, also known as pozzolana, and that by mixing it with lime to form a mortar, they had an end result of concrete with hydraulic properties.
However, the Romans made use of modern tools and materials like concrete. The Romans invented the arch and the dome as new architectural styles. Not all Roman art is imitated from the Greeks. Greek sculptures measurements were related to human scale and organic form of the human body (anatomy). Greek artists signed their works, which in time made them famous.
Romans believed in equal voting, and equal access to the government for all, which is also shown in our Democratic Government. Another way Greeks and Romans still influence out modern civilization is through art. Greek art strongly influenced Rome’s art. Greek art continues to play a key role in Literature and Art classes in our modern civilization. Greeks has highly developed literacy, which included drama, poetry, and music.
All cities were close to water bodies while Rome was an inland nation and arranged on the banks of River Tiber. Talking about art of Greece and Rome, Greeks were thought to be better than that of Romans. One of the sculptures that Greece is known with is Venus de Milo. Romans were great at mosaic, wall painting and they were also known for creating realistic portraits.
