Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare between 1591 and 1596. It features two young, star-crossed lovers who are forbidden to be together due to a long-lasting family feud. Romeo and Juliet is written in Early Modern English and because of this, it is often hard for readers to understand what is truly happening. Since the play is difficult for many to interpret, things such as remixes are made. A remix is defined as an alternative version of a text that includes some of the same elements from the original story. Modernizing is a common way that stories are remixed. The novel follows a similar plot and keeps most of the characters from Romeo and Juliet. Even though the book follows the same plot as Romeo and Juliet, many things throughout the story have been changed or Modernized to fit the targeted audience of the book. Throughout the book but mainly in scene one, the book mentions things that fit the liking of many modern-day teenagers, for instance, Starbucks. “Charlie hands me the Starbucks cup, folding herself down next to me on the bed and stuffing another piece of candy into her mouth as she continues to lecture me.” This represents a way that modernization has been used in this remix to appeal to a specific audience, for instance, teenagers. Second, the “balcony scene” of When you were mine, consists of when Rosaline finds Juliet and Rob on the balcony talking about their relationship which makes Rosaline upset. This compares to the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet because it has the same characters and results in similar effects on other characters. Both the Capulets and Montagues would be unsettled over Romeo and Juliet's love for each other much like in When you were mine how Rosaline is upset about Juliet and Rob’s relationship.
