In “How we listen to Music,” Aaron Copland begins his essay by examining the three ways of listening to music or as he calls them “Planes” (Page 442) the three planes he examines are Sensuous, Expressive and sheerly Musical Planes (Page 442). Copland organizes his essays around explaining these three different ways of listening to music, he analyzes how most listeners actually hear music, and how they might enrich their listening experience. In music, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Buddy Holly and Marvin Gaye were the most prolific people on the world stage. Marlon Brando, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe ruled the cinematic stage. However, the major highlight of this era was the dawn of technologies involvement in our life. Radio, television and all electronics in general no longer became wants but needs. Once somebody owned one they were aware of everything happening around them, knew what’s hot and what’s not and could be easily persuaded to buy the newest vacuum cleaner model or dress from the shops.
These inventions changed the way that people interacted with one another. An example of this is the battery-less radio, created in 1925 by Edward Samuel Rogers. This invention was extremely helpful, as the radio could be plugged into a household electrical socket, opposed to requiring cumbersome batteries. The radio was so well regarded that it was considered “…The set that marks a new era in radio” (Freeman-Shaw, Haskings-Winner 47). This invention not only secured Rogers’ place in the history of communication technology, but also allowed more Canadians to have access to a radio, as anyone with household electricity could use it.
Wilson also believed that streaming are going to be a norm as it is free and more advantageous than buying music or even downloading songs. This situation depicts an emerging change in the music industry. 5 years ago, Listeners had to choose whether to buy CD or download songs. Notably, we have started entering the new era of music streaming and their only choices are whether to download or streaming the song. Streaming music services like Spotify, Pandora and The Hype Machine have grown significantly in the past few years.

Radio broadcasting helps with people’s entertainment. Instead of having to go out, they could just enjoy it from their own home. Television was also created during this period. This has also helped with the entertainment for people. And one last invention is the walkie talkie.
They had jacks for microphones and places for turntables. Then the bigger, the more accessories, the better or cooler. Then people started being more interested in things like functionality and cost. Then they started to become a big status symbol of urban culture. Later in the 80s they were replaced by hollow disposable boxes called Walkmans.
Over the coming decades, radio technology has started to become more and more advanced and used for important aspects of our lives. Endorsed by the United States Navy to communicate between ships, the radio became a very effective tool. In the late 19th century, inventors such as Guglielmo Marconi, Nikola Tesla, and Thomas Edison made significant advancements in wireless telegraphy, which would allow for the future advancement of the technology. This charge would be the beginning of an era where the radio started appearing in the houses of Americans. Soon companies started to create content that was interesting to almost every American, which led to a boom in the amount of houses that had radios.
Rock and roll has changed tremendously over the years. Usually an electric guitar would guide the melody over the song's length, "The melody was clearly laid down with an electric guitar," Gale in context. As time went on, the songs changed, as did the people who played them. Now rock and roll has evolved to something much different than it was then. 1970’s Music The 1970’s changed the music industry introducing rock and roll, disco, and heavy metal. Although, 70’s music did pick up a little bit of style and tune from the 60’s, it was still a whole new decade of music.
