Essay. St Teresa of Avila was a Spanish Mystic, Roman Catholic Saint, Carmelite nun and author. Teresa was born in Gotarrendura Spain 1515. She found her peace through mental prayer and lived a meditative life. Teresa was a significant figure in Church history because she faced daunting tasks and fought for her rights to speak her thoughts and beliefs of God. Teresa relied on her faith in God to overcome adversity, by founding the order for nuns and writing stories and prayers, which continues to inspire us today to live in peace. In 1562, Teresa founded the first convent of the reform. When the convent was founded, the Roman Catholic Church was effected positively because the people in the community now had a holy place to pray. Teresa ended up living there at the convent for the next five years: “She faced a daunting task and endured terrifying opposition. Her health failed and she was labelled a dangerous radical” (Grunow, 2014). St Teresa of Avila left an impact on society in her time, but an even more significant impact long term because she overcame adversity and her Achievements have left an impact on the world. This effected the Catholic Church because Teresa tried to focus the order back to prayer and the original Rule of living simply and inspiring other nuns to do the same. She restored the strictness and devotion of earlier times as the church had become corrupted. “The Long term impact of the reformation is evident as the Discalced Carmelites are still and order today and are throughout Australia and the world” Laundra Weebly 2012. Her work reformed the Discalced Carmelites and the Church and set out a path for people to live a life of prayer.
