Slavery was an important part of the southern economy, though the north had no use for it. There was a long period of ‘protesting’ from the abolitionists, including violence; leading up to the Civil War. After the civil war, New amendments were added to the Bill of Rights, to guarantee the slaves rights. Slavery was proven unsuccessful over time due to the abolitionist movement, civil war, and the 13th 14th & 15th amendments. “Slavery became a foundation of the economy” (historynet). By the end of the revolution, the north had no profitable use of slavery (civilwar.org), and wanted the abolition of it. Abolitionists divided the nation as they became more and more violent. An example of this violence is Turner’s Rebellion, where rebel slaves were led by Nat Turner to kill nearly 70 people, causing an uproar in the South (Learnt in Social Studies). The Missouri Compromise banned slavery in the new western territories, was made to keep peace between the North and South. Unfortunately, it was seen as a threat by the south (historynet), and they started to act. President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1863, freeing all slaves in rebelling states.
