The Beatles’ Own Mozart
Sir George Martin, the producer, composer, and arranger for the Beatles, is directly responsible for some of the bands most iconic songs. While his production in the early years helped frame the success of the group, he became more prominent in the later years of the band. As the group became more experimental in their recording process, Martin’s experience in composition of classical music helped shape and refine the unique sound of the Beatles. Some of the band’s most memorable songs like ‘Yesterday,’ ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ and ‘A Day in a Life’ use classical elements that have distinguished the Beatles’ music into something more than that of a rock or pop band. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Martin’s role as the producer changed immensely during the making of the album. He acted as more than just a producer, but also an arranger and composer to the band, guiding them throughout their musical exploration. Martin explains how his role as a producer changed in the documentary, The Making of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, Martin says, “The role of the producer had changed over the years. When we started in 1962, my job was an organizer, getting them into some shape. I had to make sure they were tidy, musically. But the time pepper came along. I was a realizer of their ideas. So that if John wanted something really weird, I would have to provide it for him. Or if Paul wanted extraordinary orchestration, I had to find out what he wanted.” This shift in his role of the producer lent to The Beatles shift in music. Paul McCartney commented on Martin’s role stating that “what I think his great skill then was to allow us to do what we wanted.
