The Industrial Revolution: How It Led to Society Today. The Industrial Revolution spanned from the late 18th to the early 19th century and marked a huge shift in human history. It first originated in Britain, and then spread around Europe and then North America, which transformed societies from home and farm based work to being industrial. The Revolution was fueled by new technological advances such as the steam engine and eventually labor laws were created to enhance safety and workers' rights. The Industrial Revolution also had many negative effects such as child labor, dangerous working conditions and health/safety issues. Although child labor and poor working conditions had a negative effect, the positives of the Industrial Revolution outweigh the negatives due to the creation of labor laws, and the economic benefits of new inventions. Although there were negative effects, the positive ones outweighed them as reforms and laws were put into place to help protect workers from dangerous factory conditions. As new inventions such as the steam engine came out during the Industrial Revolution, it increased the speed of railroad development, ultimately leading to economic benefits as goods were able to be shipped out quicker and at a cheaper cost. The invention of the steam engine was a major change for transportation, people and factories were now able to move massive amounts of materials, and people in cheaper as more railroads were being built so then factories were able to be closer to economic areas. The author states, “The most important example was the steam engine.It was first developed in the late seventeenth century and improved over the course of the eighteenth century, the coal-powered steam engine ultimately replaced dependence on human or animal power.
