A key social factor that led to the start of the Civil War was the North and South’s disagreements about slavery. For years, the North and South have continuously argued about slavery rights in America. Typically, the South supported slavery, and the North was against slavery. The Southern states relied on slavery to maintain their farms, especially cotton production. The Northern states did not support slavery as they believed in civil rights and made an effort to discontinue free labor. The general conflict was whether slavery should be allowed to expand west, or if it should be extinct, which would prevent it from expanding west. Another political factor that contributed to the start of the Civil War was The Compromise of 1850, The Missouri Compromise of 1850, and The Fugitive Slave Act were some of the main ones. The Fugitive Slave Act and the Missouri Compromise were both a part of the Compromise of 1850. The Missouri Compromise made Missouri join the union and become a slave state, and Maine joined as a free state. The compromise stated that there would be no slavery north of 36 degrees 30’. Many Southern people saw the Missouri Compromise as “unconstitutional”, arguing that Congress didn’t have the right to abolish slavery. Northerners disliked it as well, as the compromise meant slavery was expanding into new territory. Abraham Lincoln shared his thoughts about The Missouri Compromise in a speech in 1854, “This is practically legislating for slavery, recognizing it, endorsing it, propagating it, extending it.” (Lincoln, 1854).
