In the South, there was a group called the Ku Klux Klan, or the KKK. They would run rampant killing whoever they pleased, and no one would stop them. In a testimony to the Senate, Abram Colby states, “On the 29th of October 1869, [the Klansmen] broke my door open , took me out of my bed, took me to the woods and whipped me three hours or more and left me for dead” (Colby 513). The KKK targeted African Americans and tortured them to death.
Founded in 1866, the (KKK) extended into virtually each southern state by 1870 and have become a vehicle for white southern resistance to the Republican Party’s Reconstruction-era policies aimed toward establishing political and economic equality for blacks. Its members waged associate underground campaign of intimidation and violence directed at white and black Republican leaders. Congress passed legislation designed to curb KKK, the organization saw its primary goal “the reestablishment of white supremacy” fulfilled through Democratic victories in state legislatures across the South within the decennary. The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.
The KKK was a group of white southerners who did not want the policies establishing political and economic equality for blacks to be successful. The KKK engaged in underground campaigns of intimidation and violence directed at Republican leaders, both white and black. One of the most notorious areas of the Klan was South Carolina. In January 1871, five hundred masked men attacked a Union county jail and lynched eight black prisoners. Acts like these would go “unnoticed” by officials and other influential citizens in the area because of the fear of how the Klan would retaliate and also by the lack of care for what the Klan was doing.
Shortly after the founders one of which was Nathan Bedford Forrest the leader created the name for the clan they began to show off in front of people but they mostly did their rituals at night. Dressing themselves and their horses in white sheets they rode around the town. The klan burned crosses on hillsides or on front lawns of the blacks it expanded throughout the twentieth century.
The leaders were, white Protestant, and you were not welcomed to the Klan if you did not believe in their beliefs. During the peak of the reemergence of the clan, it reached up to 4 million Klan members nationwide (6). The Klan burned crosses in front yards of houses to scare the people that they hated. The cross also represented the Klan’s religious views. The Klan used “lynching” to show the African-Americans what will happen to them if they do something wrong.
During the 19th century the Ku Klux Klan were feared by freedmen everywhere. The Klu Klux Klan were a group of white supremacists who were trying to restore white supremacy by hanging or lynching freedmen. The Klu Klux Klan terrorized freedmen in Georgia during the 19th century in an attempt to restore white supremacy by lynching blacks. The Ku Klux Klan terrorized Georgia citizens in the years after the Civil War but they were not brought to justice because some members were government officials.
F. Ku Klux Klan The Ku Klux Klan, also known as the KKK was founded by Confederate veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1866 (“Ku Klux Klan.”). The KKK dedicated themselves to violence against almost any person who taught he didn’t believe in white supremacy or was just black (“Ku Klux Klan.”). A famous attack by the KKK was in South Carolina on January 1871 “500 masked men attacked the Union County jail and lynched eight black prisoners.”
