From what started as disagreements between members of opposite parties, the American Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars in the entire history of America. The Civil War began in 1861 and was over by 1865. In that time, the war claimed the lives of many Americans on both sides, with casualties of over 600,000 soldiers. This conflict was more than just a battle of North and South; it was a battle of lifestyle and ideology dating back to the beginning of the nation. The American Civil War resulted in the violent apex of disagreements in the United States that had started when the Union was first formed, and the impact it has on American Society shows itself even now, more than 150 years later.

Perhaps the most stark difference between Northern and Southern lifestyle was the presence of slavery. In the North, Americans believed that the presence of slavery threatened their jobs and the expansion of industry. Some growing reform movements in the North also targeted slavery as a core problem of the United States. The South, however, was economically dependent on the presence of slavery. The Democratic South favored the rights of individual states, and they believed that states should have the final say on following Federal laws. They despised tariffs passed by Congress on their agricultural goods, and these tariffs were seen as tools to restrict the rights of the Southern States. They also believed that states held the right to secede from the Union if necessary. The Republican North favored a strong central government and believed that the Federal Government had the final say on what laws the nation is to follow. They believed tariffs against agricultural products were necessary and they viewed Southern Secession as an act of treason. The disagreements between Democrats and Republicans almost exactly stem from disagreements involving the Federalist and Democratic-Republican parties, disagreements which began when the nation was created.
The end of the Civil War marked the end of these disagreements that had persisted since the dawn of the Union. The impact of Northern victory can be seen almost immediately within the nation. Slavery, a practice that the South had almost solely relied on economically, had been stopped with three amendments to the Constitution. These amendments stated that slavery was banned within the United States, all African Americans were citizens of the United States, and that African American men had the right to vote. This
