During the XV and XVI centuries, an impressive and vigorous artistic, literary, scientific and cultural movement flourished in Europe, which also had profound political and social implications; this movement is better known as the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a time of change, but at the same time there were things that remained almost the same as in the Middle Ages, such as food and hygiene. In this period of time, society became transformed into a society gradually dominated by centralized political institutions with an urban and mercantile economy in which the patronage of education, the arts and music was developed. There was a cultural and political renewal with the intention of instituting a new season in the European civilization. However, the Renaissance focused on man intelligence. New geographical and scientific discoveries plunged Europe into a quest for freedom, and the medieval penumbra was changed by a new light that made all the arts flourish as never seen before. The period of history of music between the XVI and XVI centuries is what encompasses the music in the Renaissance. The transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance itself is difficult to establish because it did not evolve at the same throughout Europe. For example, when in some countries all medieval vestiges had been left behind, in others it was not yet so, so they lived just as in the Middle Ages for a few years until the Renaissance spirit was fully established. As a limit, the Renaissance should be considered finished when the composer Claudio Monteverdi and his contemporaries begin to turn towards the baroque towards the beginning of century XVII although, for example in England, the Renaissance musical period lasted a few decades
