Cherie Dimaline uses countless literary devices in her novel to add meaning to her novel The Marrow Thieves. This essay looks at how a metaphor and two similes gives Cherie Dimaline more meaning to her novel.

To similes, metaphors, irony, allusion, etc. For this one specific piece of writing “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, there is a bunch of figurative language painted across this story, advancing its mood and setting. The setting and mood in any story in general with figurative language gives you a better picture and thought of where the character(s) are. For “The Most Dangerous Game”, Richard uses a few of personifications and similes to describe where the character is.
Without literary devices, the stories you read would be dull and uneventful. This is why Richard Connell effectively uses similes and imagery in “The Most Dangerous Game” to help give it life. In this story, Connell used similes to give the reader a feeling of how things looked or felt. On page 19 the author wrote “...but it was like trying to see through a blanket” (Connell).
He used simile because he uses the word like to relate the mosquitos to the tiny, bloodsucking men. Edward Bloor also uses flashbacks as a way to give us insight on what happened before the family moved to Tangerine that have been effective to the plot. For example, (page 167-168) “Dad was saying, “OK, Erik. Pretend that Paul is in the center of an imaginary clock, and that I am standing here at twelve o’clock position, right behind him. Good.
A simile is a comparison that describes two different things using ¨like¨ or ¨as.¨ The first way Connell demonstrates using a simile is in the example, ¨The sea was as flat as a plate glass window.¨ He describes the sea to a smooth glass window. During this part of the story, there was no breeze in the air and the ocean waves were still and calm, which caused Rainsford to feel stressed about the strange things that were happening around the island. Another way Connell used a simile was ¨... his thick eyebrows were pointed and military mustache was as black as the night from which Rainsford had come.¨

Imagery helps paint a mental picture for the reader, while similes compare two unlike objects using like or as.

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien tells the stories of multiple war veterans who have served in the Vietnam War. It takes a very in-depth approach to explaining the veterans’ experiences, feelings, and views both during the war, and after the war. Throughout the novel, readers learn that things you either do, or don’t do in life, can make you feel the same way as the war veterans. O’Brien uses symbolism and regretful tone to teach readers that the results of your actions in war can lead to you experiencing shame, remorse, and guilt for the rest of your life. O’Brien uses symbolism to show that Lieutenant Jimmy Cross has to deal with the survivor’s guilt of letting his platoon member, Tim Lavender, die in the warzone.
They use metaphors to help connect their own lives to the lives of others. Whether it is from literary works that they are reading or connecting to each other’s lives. This use is very effective because it helps us to know what is going in the student's lives by connecting with things and sayings that we can understand. Allusions are also a very effective in this piece because it connects the real-life problems that the students are going through with things that everyone can understand. An example of this is when the students compare their lives to the lives of Holocaust survivors.
The Most Dangerous Game is full of countless amounts of literary elements. The literary elements go from foreshadowing to similes to personification. This is used in the story to keep the reader interested. In The Most Dangerous Game, Connell uses sensory language, foreshadowing, and similes to enhance the suspense in the story and also to interact with the reader.
