A transactional leadership style follows a managerial philosophy of reinforcement and exchanges, managing employees by establishing specific goals and then offering a reward for achieving them. The transformational leader focus on nurturing and positively motivating their employees. Rather than micromanage, transformational leaders foster an independent workplace that promotes creativity, desires innovative thinking and empowers employees to make their own decisions in their work. It is also the advantage of the transformational leaders to emphasize the personal and professional growth and encourage all employees to think creatively in developing solutions to longstanding challenges. This type of leadership works well in organizations or teams where the goals include developing the talent of the employees. While the transactional leaders is best approach in maximizing operational efficiency, it can also fall short in the areas of innovation, long-term strategy creation and employee development. This disadvantages is a minor factor but they must not be neglected. They can cause a major stir in the nursing process. One disadvantage in the transactional leadership will be the motivation in giving rewards for those who work hard in the department. Not all employee will be happy in receiving a rewards. This kind of system will not work for everyone. We can also find the lack of focus on building relationships because transactional leaders will focus on using rewards and boost satisfaction, they will forget that the working conditions of the employees like the employees relationship with the manager is also a critical factor on building engagement and satisfaction for their employee.
