Bruno's development as a character In the novel, The boy in the striped Pajamas by John Boyne, we can see the main character Bruno change for the better and how he is different from his family. The first event, Bruno's life, gets turned upside down when he has to leave Berlin to go somewhere else for his father's work. We see this in (19) “'You don't mean we're leaving Berlin?' he asked, gasping for air as he got the words out. `I'm afraid so,' said Mother, nodding her head sadly. 'Your father's job is—'”. Bruno is clearly shocked and in the next page we see that he is not happy with this change “`But what about school?' said Bruno, interrupting her, a thing he knew he was not supposed to do but which he felt he would be forgiven for on this occasion. 'And what about Karl and Daniel and Martin? How will they know where I am when we want to do things together?' `You'll have to say goodbye to your friends for the time being”. This drastic change leads Bruno to be resentful when he gets to his new home, and finding the smallest inconveniences extremely jarring.
