In today's society women have an increased role in the labor workforce. Compared to the 1950's, mothers usually stayed at home to tend to childbearing responsibilities. Much time was spent between the caregiver and child. But today children spend long, intense hours in daycare. Routinely sending a child to daycare can negatively affect the parent-child relationship as well as the child's cognitive performance, attachment style, emotional state, aggression levels, academic achievement, behavior, etc. How can one expect to develop a relationship with no time set aside to build the necessary bond? The lack of quality time and meaningful interactions between the parent and child disrupts the parent-child relationship. One parent stated "I miss having contact with the leader of the unit; we rarely meet. When she is there she is very passive; she says almost nothing" (Drugli & Undheim, 2012, p. 55). The overall satisfaction with the day care staff wasn’t adequate. In general communication is one of the key components while building a relationship with someone. In order to communicate, time has to be set aside so both parties are present. That’s not the case for children in day care. Parents do well to find ways to strengthen the parent child relationship.
