In order to evaluate my own argument from negative consequences, there are three critical questions that must be answered. The first is about the strength of the probability or plausibility that the consequences that I cited will occur. While I do not think that it is completely certain that other academics will avoid being critical on controversial topics, it does seem very likely. The second question asks for evidence that can be used to support this claim that Potter being pushed to resign is very likely to cause academics to be less likely to write critical articles on controversial topics. There is certainly evidence to support this claim. In Heath’s article, he notes that there has been a move away from hiring tenured faculty in universities, with schools preferring sessional and contract teachers. This means that academics are likely to be more careful when writing so that they are not at risk of losing their …show more content…

I think that there are, the most obvious being that Potter’s resignation will ensure that other academics are sure to ensure that their opinions and articles are well supported with evidence. The message is certainly sent that articles, especially those on controversial topics, have to be properly supported with evidence that supports the opinions given. Even considering this, I do not think that this consequence undermines my argument. In order to get this positive consequence, Potter does not have to be pushed to resign, but can be disciplined in other ways that show the importance of proper evidence. I think that the initial outrage was actually enough to create this consequence, showing academics the possible outcome of not supporting opinions on controversial topics with evidence. Pushing Potter to resign would certainly reinforce this consequence, but I think it is unnecessary given the negative consequence that I outlined
