How Does Katniss Use Figurative Language In The Hunger Games

As Traci Chee in the Speaker “Rovon said very seriously, looking into her eyes, "You never have to take a life, Riki. You always have a choice. Archer folded his napkin. Almost picked a fight with his uncle. Almost walked out. A choice? Sometimes the choice was to kill or die”. This relates to the Book Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins because in the book you have to fight for your survival in an arena. This book is about how tributes are televised being forced to fight in an event to the death. Throughout the book, Susan Collins uses figurative language to show the violence of man. The madness of man is rooted in our desire to survive. An example of this is when Peeta is talking to Katniss, “The arena is a monster, and we are its prey" (Collins 86). This statement of Peeta where he is using personification of the arena shows how the arena is making themes into monsters and that it will consume them in the end. Another example is when Katniss talks to Peeta about the horrors they witnessed, "The mutations snarl and snap, their eyes filled with a malevolent intelligence that chills me to the bone"(Collins 322). An example of this is when Katniss responds when Peeta says he doesn't want to be a killer, "Violence is never the answer, but fear can make you do the unthinkable"(Collins 280). This quote is showing how the author used a metaphor for how fear can be a force to push people to kill to show that the fear of not being killed causes us to kill. Another example of this is when Katniss is talking about her fear, "The fear that had been gathering in my chest like a storm cloud finally broke, unleashing a torrent of anger and frustration"(Collins 304). This quote about Katniss talking about her fear is showing how the author is using the metaphor of a storm cloud to emphasize how her fear will lead to an outburst causing violence and destruction much like a storm
