In this lesson Ms. Cheong is working on comprehension skills. Students listened to information about mealworms and they needed to demonstrate comprehension of the information. The teacher used different strategies to help her ELL students comprehend the topic and taught them different ways to understand what is seen, heard and read. Ms. Cheong used different strategies to help her students understand what they heard, to clarify their knowledge and put what they learn in their own words. She used student’s pairs as a strategy to allow them to support each other and practice their speaking skills. While watching the video I noticed that she used strategic pairing, she carefully analyzed her students and paired them with students that complement each other. These pairs allowed the teacher to circulate the room to talk to different students and to offer more assistance to the children who needed it. Cheong. I will be able to implement these strategies with minor modification because my students are about the same age and share some of these students’ characteristics. I think my students will greatly benefit from a pair system similar to the one that was used on the video. I can use pairs that complement each other, which will allow me to maximize time and to be able to walk around and confer with more students. Scaffolding is another great strategy; I use scaffolding with my students, but I like the way Ms. Cheong remind the students what they were supposed to listen to, so they can pay attention to the most important parts of the text. I think that reminding the students the directions or the questions we will be asking can help them focus on the important parts of the lesson and/or text and it will increase their comprehension. I think this will be the best strategy to use with my students, to allow them to develop their listening and comprehension
