Romeo's Journey: From Impulsive Youth to Determined Lover in Shakespeare's Romeo
“A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life; whose misadventur'd piteous overthrows doth, with their death, bury their parents' strife” (Prolog: 6-8). The play's opening words inform the spectator that Romeo and Juliet are, “star-crossed lovers”. Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragic play about the ill-fated love between two young lovers from feuding families. Throughout the play, Romeo, the male protagonist, undergoes a significant development as he transforms from a lovesick and impulsive youth into a mature and determined lover.
At the start of the play, Romeo is presented as a lovesick youth who is infatuated with a woman named Rosaline. He is portrayed as having no control over his emotions and is easily swayed by his feelings. However, when Romeo meets

He is willing to risk everything, including his life, for his love for Juliet. This is evident when he kills Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, in a fit of anger and is banished from Verona, as a result of Romeo's actions. This shows that he is impulsive and reckless as he confesses, "O, I am fortune's fool!" (Act 3, Scene 1, Line 129). But they also reveal the depth and genuineness of his love for Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet at this point in the play are showing intense romance for each other. She speaks with Friar Laurence and hatches a plan for Juliet to not marry Paris, Juliet is supposed to drink a vial of poison and be in a coma until she is woken up, my Romeo. The plan goes wrong, and Romeo does not know about the plan because he does not receive a note. Later in the play Romeo will say, "I will kiss thy lips; Haply some poison yet doth hang on them, to make die with a restorative" (Act 5, Scene 1, Lines 164-166) before he realizes Juliet is still
