The Tempest by William Shakespeare is a comedy about the Duke of Milan, Prospero, being overthrown by his brother Antonio and the King of Naples, Alonso. Prospero restores justice by returning to power by using his magic to bring them and their servants to the island he was sent to.Prospero’s daughter, Miranda, falls in love with Ferdinand, the prince of Naples, and they wed before returning back to Naples while Prospero frees his slaves, Ariel and Caliban. Alonso is a character that positively develops throughout the play. The selfish Alonso transforms into a compassionate, caring, and apologetic character as Prospero influences his arrival on the island, appreciating those around him. Antonio allied with Alonso, offering him money if he were to assist, and, egocentrically, he agreed. Prospero tells Miranda that Antonio "thinks me now incapable, confederates/So dry he was for sway with the King of Naples/To pay an annual tribute" (I ii, 130-132). Being bought off for his own gain and becoming enemies with Prospero is only one way that Alonso is selfish and self-absorbed. He agreed to this proposition by Antonio, removed Prospero and his immediate family from Milan, and gave the dukedom to Prospero’s brother. "Which was that he should presently extirpate me and mine out of the dukedom in lieu of'the premises' of homage—and I know not how much tribute" (I, ii, 145-148).Prospero had thought of Alonso as a foe like his arrogant and cynical brother
