How Does The Giver Create A Dystopian Society

I have read the novel The Giver (1993) , written by Lois Lowry. I have chosen the theme freedom because it is the most precious thing in life. I could not imagine a life without it. Then I read this book about a perfect world without freedom and choices. The world of The Giver is actually freedomless. The elders stripped people of their freedom and all their memories of freedom. The government created a dystopian society to ensure that the freedom is no longer an option for citizens.It was not only the right to choose that they erased from the society. Love, pain, emotions, war, music, hunger, colour, and danger was removed (Chapter 20, pg. 233). The book presents ‘‘Sameness’’ as the ideology practised in the society. In order to achieve equality they had to limit and contain their freedom by controlling or letting go of many things. “We gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others.” However they never accomplished sameness perfectly (Chapter 12, pg. 120-121). Though I think that they mastered dependence because through the years people fitted in. The details may be different but the main ideas are similar. I mean just like the society in the book, our society is completely controlled by the government. However we still have our rights. For instance we are able to decide where to live or what to do. Personally, I chose to study engineering in this specific high school. I cannot decide much now, since I am not eighteen (but I will be one day). In general, people have the privilege to change their names, choose their jobs, pick what to wear or eat and so on. They can decide if they want to get married or not, and whom to marry like my parents who chose each other. All of those are basic rights that are forbidden in the society of The
