In a changing society it’s pretty easy to lose sight of your homestyle traditions when nowadays you can just send a birthday text or post a happy holidays post on Facebook to your friends and family. Before, people would have to deliver letters or send out birthday cards with hopes that they would get delivered on time to the recipient. With just a click of a button and a few texts in can get delivered in seconds, it's no wonder people have gradually accepted the idea of this newfound form of communication. Despite the benefits, it actually affects the United States Post Office. It’s no secret that the USPS is going through some tough times, the Postal Service alone “experienced a 13 percent drop in mail volume last fiscal year….and lost $3.8 billion.” (Source C). The USPS also “anticipates steeper drops on mail volume and revenue over the next 10 years…”(Source C) which can further complicate the company's future. Unless there's a change, the Postal Service will continue to lose money and its customers, projections already show that the mail volume the USPS used to get will never return to its “pre-recession levels”(Source C). In a world like ours, technology has been used all around to create a more efficient and satisfying lifestyle, so why not use it to create a better and productive supply of communications (mail) for customers? One way the USPS can use technology is by “getting into the e-business”, if “more people are emailing...meet their needs” (Source A). Futurist, Watts Wacker suggests that the USPS should “give every american an email address when they're born” (Source A). Therefore, if people were to look elsewhere for another email address at least the USPS can have some sort of relevance in people's mind and help with attracting more customers who are more tech-savvy than letter carrying. Another way, the USPS could use technology is by asking Congress for an expansion of internet access under the Post Office. Futurist, David Houle, states that broadening the Post Office’s internet access would “define the Postal Service as a communications-delivery service, rather than just a team of letter carriers” (Source A). This doesn’t mean the USPS won’t deliver mail anymore, they still will but this time they’ll have more access to people who may prefer to not have mail and instead want it digitally. If used right, the Postal Service can definitely use this to their advantage and potentially open their line up for more customers and mail outtake while also helping combat their past losses
