One of the most well-known poets in America, Walt Whitman is renowned for his use of free poetry and his aptitude for evoking the spirit of the United States. Rap music, with its own beat, rhythm, and message, has done the same for American music. Rap music and Walt Whitman's poetry have many things in common, even though there may be some glaring disparities between them as well. The first thing that was significant to America was rap music. Rap music is people talking quicker than normal to a music beat. The people on the streets in the 70's really started the music now called rap. When people on the streets rapped they usually portrayed a negative tough guy image.
Walter “Walt” Whitman was born May 31, 1819 in West Hills, Long Island to Walter and Louisa Whitman, as the second of eight surviving children. At age eleven, Whitman began working in printing to help support his family, moved on to teaching at seventeen, then in 1841 moved on to journalism, founding the Long-Islander. After five years publishing under his own paper, he became editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

The Impact of Hip-Hop Ever since its birth in the 1970s in West Bronx, Hip Hop has been known as “Gangsta” music and most commonly associated with black culture. Since its creation it has become a fast growing genre of music and has growing fame all over the world. The popularity of it has increased to all races, age and gender. However the growing popularity of hip hop has come with several controversies among scholars. Some scholars argue that the growing popularity of the genre is very helpful to low income families who can use this as their outlet into going to Universities, on the other side some believe associating the genre to black culture is bad for the culture as a whole and they should not be associated together.
