How Dyslexia Affect Reading Skills

A dyslexic person can face several problems with reading and writing. Reading time turns tiring, this activity demands huge concentration and effort. They could need to read something over and over again in order to fully understand, it can take them more time to read a text because it is difficult to remember what they have just read. Dyslexia can make readings seem inaccurate due to the addition or miss of words, they tend to misread words or complete phrases; they possibly will find a text complicated because they might not be familiarized with the vocabulary or they keep forgetting the meaning of words. All these difficulties are caused by the cognitive characteristics of dyslexia; “they do not have any connection with the lack of practice or understanding the purpose of the reading” (Hammond & Hercules , n.d). Short-term memory and visual processing are the principal and most important cognitive characteristics of dyslexia affecting reading skills. In order to read fluently we need to match sounds to their corresponding symbols, short-term memory makes this task difficult to accomplish. But with dyslexia, it is harder to communicate with the outside world. Dyslexics find difficult to spell, especially small words, they spell words the form they sound and confuse words or miss them. Their writing process is slow and plenty of drafts, they tend to write quickly in order to maintain the ideas.
