Is there a heredity related reason of how learning disabilities develop and if not, how do learning disabilities develop? To go in more depth, the learning disability that will be focused on will be dyslexia. Dyslexia affects roughly 17% of people and the reason for 74% of people who have reading disabilities (Molecular Psychiatry 2012). Dyslexia is when one struggles with being a fluent speaker, has spelling errors, and unable to read properly due to the lack of ability to decode words. There have been multiple studies that show gene expression can affect dyslexia, however I will only be focusing on one. Environmental aspects can impact the brain, which then can cause a dyslexic mutation. David Urion, M.D states “certain toxic exposures, such as lead, can produce injury to the developing brain and lead to learning disabilities such as dyslexia.” There are other environmental factors, such as malnutrition and poor prenatal healthcare. Malnutrition is the lack of nutrition intake. Professor John Stein from DysTalk states “Fatty acids is 20% of the makeup of the brain. Unfortunately, nowadays, we eat very little fish. This creates a problem because the essential fatty acids that come from fish oils and are incorporated in the brain are moved in and out of the membranes and other places in the brain, and if you don't replace them then the workings of the brain are impaired and be part of the cause of dyslexia.” This can be an environmental impact because some people may not be able to afford the proper nutrition. Poor prenatal health care can also be an environmental, aspect because if the mother is not properly taking care of the baby by protecting it and make sure the infant is safe, then that can cause issues as
