“You must be the change you wish to see in the world,” said Gandhi. He was an effective leader in India. However, in Hawai’i, there also was a successful leader who was Kamehameha. Gandhi was an effective leader because he led India's independence movement in the 1930s and 40s by speaking softly and letting the British face down with stirring speeches and nonviolent protest. Kamehameha was an influential leader because he united all the Hawaiian islands and became the first leader of all Hawaiian islands. Kamehameha and Mohandas Gandhi were both similar because they both made a bold move that changed their life, the two leaders were also similar because they were not supposed to be any leader. Kamehameha improved and kept a lot of things. Like he kept the Kapu system, and he collected the taxes in a traditional way. However, he changed a lot of things too. For example, trades with foreigners increased greatly, and he created a law calling it ‘Mamalahoe’ or ‘The splintered paddle.' He also changed has he placed a kapu on young trees to conserve natural resource. Gandhi also kept and changed a lot of things.
