Is Atticus Finch the most courageous character in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird? Or is it his son Jem? Atticus does raise Scout, Jem’s sister, and Jem by himself, he does shoot the mad dog when no one else dared. Then after all that he defends Tom Robinson, a black man, that sets the whole town hanging by a thread. Although Atticus is portrayed as a monster by the town he can be considered courageous because he upholds what he thinks is right, even when the town does not. As stated above, Atticus had raised Jem and Scout by himself. He fed them, he clothed them, he housed them, and he loved them. He loved them no matter what they did, and when they went astray from the path of goodness, he set them back on it. Jem, in his adolescence, had fits of anger. As we learn in part two of the book, it is not good. Jem was walking home when Ms. Dubose started her usual ranting but this time it was different. She went on about Atticus and how he was a disgrace to this town, and Jem finally snapped. He took his sister’s newly acquired baton and started smashing all of her snow on the mountain flower bushes. As his punishment, Atticus made Jem read to Ms. Dubose for a little more than a month. Those who say that Atticus is not the most courageous argue that Jem, Atticus’ son, is more courageous. They say this with evidence, for example Jem is the most courageous because he fights Ms. Dubose to protect his family name. They also support their argument by saying that Jem showed the most courage by following Atticus to the jail.
