How Is Chemistry Used In The Study Of Geology?

461 Words2 Pages

Chemistry is used in the study of geology to determine how the earth is affected by humans or changes in the atmosphere, and it is also used to determine the exact compositions of different soils or rocks. Geologists use chemistry to see exactly how the Earth changes underneath us, they use it to determine changes in the composition of the soil in areas affected by pollution, or they can detect certain deposits of resources in the ground. They examine the chemistry of soil and rock of different areas to see how differently the earth developed in different areas of the world. Chemistry is also used in space exploration to examine and study other systems and planets. The chemical makeup of the different planetary atmospheres reveals many things …show more content…

Chemistry could be used in the exploration of space through using it to understand the effects of solar radiation on planets and living systems. This knowledge then can be used to develop protective measures for astronauts or satellites traveling to other planets or systems. Chemistry is also used in the study of the ocean, also known as oceanography. The chemical makeup of the ocean is the determining factor in the ecosystems that live in it and the circulation and climate of the ocean. Oceanographers examine the chemical compositions of the sediment and seawater to determine whether or not there a pollutants in the water or if the natural elements of the ocean have become unbalanced. Oceanographers can examine how carbon is transferred in and out of the land, sea, and atmosphere, and how the carbon can interact with the atmosphere. Chemical Oceanographers can determine how different chemicals interact with the ocean water and how to preserve the ocean. Chemical oceanographers study better methods to clean up oil spills and other chemical
