In chapter 16 of To Kill A Mockingbird, we meet a very significant character. This character is Dolphus Raymond. Dolphus Raymond is widely known around Maycomb due to being married to a black woman and having biracial (mixed) children. Before marrying a black woman, Raymond was about to marry a white woman, Spencer. On their wedding day, Spencer killed herself. Raymond then met his wife, who is black. Ever since he got married to a black woman, the town of Maycomb had looked down on him just as they do on the rest of the black folks. Even though Dolphus Raymond came from a good, white family just like anyone else from Maycomb, he is hated just the same as the black folks but still does not wish to start controversy.

All Raymond wishes to do is live in peace with his family. Raymond also symbolizes a mockingbird because he lies to protect his family. Before Jem, Scout, and Dill meet Raymond, they think of him as an evil and wicked man of is an alcoholic. After they meet him, they find out that he lies about being an alcoholic to protect his family and reputation. Even though many people hate and do not approve of decisions of Dolphus Raymond, he does not wish harm against anyone which makes him represent a mockingbird.
Dolphus Raymond represents social injustice in To Kill A Mockingbird. During Tom Robinson’s trial, Jem, Scout, and Dill meet Dolphus Raymond. They observe Mr. Raymond and notice that he is drinking from a paper bag. It is believed around Maycomb that Mr. Raymond drinks whiskey from the bag and that he is an alcoholic, but Raymond is actually just drinking coke from the bag. Raymond pretends to be a drunk so that he has an excuse to give the town for his “bad” decisions. Raymond has to endure the same treatment as the black folks in Maycomb. Knowing this, Jem, Dill, and Scout realize the social injustice that is taking place in Maycomb. This makes Jem, Dill, and Scout feel less aware of the social injustice taking place within the town because they have not truly known the hardship black people have to
