Slavery, as defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary, is the practice of owning slaves. Slavery, a horrible act, or an economy booster? Both sides can be debated for being the correct option. Historically, slavery was a recognizable part of day-to-day life. Yet, as society has changed, slavery is thought to be unjust. Slavery is still a major part of society in today’s world also. Even though slavery was accepted years ago, it is better to outlaw slavery entirely because it is wrong and immoral.
Slavery is a traumatic act and looked down upon in many religions and systems of government. The argument of slavery has been fought about for many years. It is stated in the article The Rise of New Slavery by Kevin Bales that, “Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire all made slavery integral to their social systems” (Bales 109). This is implying that slavery has been used and accepted for countless generations. It was not until recent years (18th century) that slavery has been viewed negatively in social and political lights. Yet, this horrifying act still exists in many economies.

In Douglass’s narrative, he goes into excruciating detail about his experiences being a slave. He writes about one account of his whippings, “Upon this he rushed at me with the fierceness of a tiger, tore off my clothes, and lashed me till he had worn out his switches, cutting me so savagely as to leave the marks visible for a long time after,” and then, states, “this whipping was the first of a number just like it...” (Douglass 98).
