As a leader, it is imperative to realize the influence you have on your followers. Simple things like body movements, facial expressions and gesture, and verbal communication are expressions of feelings and can result in understanding. The different forms of communication have an essential function that is expressed in body movement, facial expressions, and gesture. Which are messages you send to other perceived as either positive or negative? To some followers, a leader can either be accepted or rejected solely based on your nonverbal communication. Understanding the importance of nonverbal communication is vital to establish a good rapport with your followers. Of all the nonverbal communication, the most important are the hand gestures a leader uses. Hand gestures range from a handshake the placement of the hands or even the way you can talk with your hands. Also, the range of hand gestures you can have is three hand gestures positive hand gestures, defensive hand gestures, and no hand gestures (Tally & Temple, 2015). In all, the study includes a positive hand gestures experiment, the results were that the position of the hand faced upward. The defensive hand gestures results were the hands position at waist level and held tightly together. The no hand gestures results were the palms of the hands do not touch, only the fingertips.
