Proving that one of the main issues with school dress code policies is the amount of discrimination that girls may have to face throughout their time in the education system. There is also the issue of why a girl is disciplined for what they are wearing just because they are girls. According to Jillian Jorgensen’s article, “Most of the students who are being disciplined for dress code related interactions are girls or Trans or gender nonconforming students…” (Jorgensen) Adding to the amount of unfairness the school dress code policy has, especially towards girls in the education system.
I, Naomi Diarra, have always had a problem with the way society expects girls to dress. Some girls, including myself believe that dress code is addressed solely to females. We feel as though we are forced to dress conservatively in order to prevent “negative” attention from males. If something we wear is considered innapropriate, we are then subject to a scolding or punishment of some kind. The teachers and administrators say that they are preparing us for the future but how are they doing this if they still have not taught boys how to respect the bodies of women?
This essay illustrates how biased our country is. Although we have multiple amendments that legally make minorities equivalent to males, females are still treated as if they’re completely irrelevant. Boys look and treat girls of all ages like they are objects or property. Males tend to believe they are stronger and more powerful than the women. Although men do tend to be stronger, women could be just as powerful if they took a stand or a little change was made.
For many years now woman have been able to express themselves, and show that they are comfortable with their bodies. But once again the male hierarchy has gone into play, and girls are told to hide their bodies away, and not be who they want to be. So that is what the young girls of this generation are being taught, that they need to be respectful at all times and make sure that the boys have all their accommodations met. One study in particular called the “Everyday Sexism Project” tells a story of a young girl in high school, “I got dress coded at my school for wearing shorts.
They also need to stop targeting and sexualizing teenage girls with the dress code. Growing up school dress code has taught females from a young age that they should cover their bodies, and that their bodies are “distracting” to not only their classmates, but to society in general.
