Do women in the 21st century experience equal treatment? No, women have been seen as lesser than men for many centuries. “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions,” written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, describes how American society is patriarchal and lists the numerous ways society has viewed men superior to women. She also provides several suggestions to help put an end to the effects of the patriarchy that harms women. This text showed Americans the inequalities women have faced and overcome due to sexist civilization. This is often seen in our community because women are deprived of their right to basic human rights. Sexual harassment has been a huge issue in America for many years and it is usually targeted towards women. Women’s right to basic bodily respect has diminished greatly because the number of women who get catcalled, inappropriate stares, whistling, and even assault has increased. Society has blamed women for these actions from men by saying that ‘they should be more reserved.’ Women have been taught to dress ‘appropriately’ by avoiding clothes that show skin and it has been reinforced several times in elementary, middle, and high school. Girls have stricter dress codes because school administrators state that shoulders and thighs are distracting to other males. The fact that schools are dictating what clothes young girls, ranging from five to eighteen, should wear shows how society expects women and girls to accommodate men for their behaviors. Girls are not allowed to wear skirts shorter than the length of their fingertips resting by their sides because it will disturb other students' focus in class since it attracts
