As of the fall of 2015, there was 50.1 million students attending public schools grades pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade. (National Center for Education Satistics, n.d.) The last time the NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) updated was in 2012-2013, they listed that 4.4 million students are ESL learners. (National Center for Education Satistics, n.d.) With a great majority of the population in school who treating English as a second language, teachers are faced with having a multicultural classroom. They have to make their classroom sensitive to multicultural students. A multicultural teacher is a teacher who is aware in students cultural, ethnic, social, emotional, and cognitive needs. The first step is creating a multicultural climate within the classroom. For multicultural education to be completely effective, it should be used within the subject’s areas. These subjects include language arts, math, social studies, geography, and science. The second is Involving students in the classroom. When teachers are introducing a new subject like multicultural, they should be excited and show that it is an interesting topic to discuss. Next, making a place for English Speakers of Other Languages. Students who speak other languages as a primary language and treat English as a second language, there are five focus points teachers should focus on. One, procedures and course organization. Two, language acquisition and development. Three, adjustments to the culture and educational system. Last, communication and interaction needs. The fourth step when creating a special classroom is creating a culturally correct literature list.
