In the article Multicultural Education: For Freedom’s Sake, James Banks discusses multicultural education in America’s curriculum, society, and peoples viewpoints about the topic. He discusses that although learning about about the traditional America’s culture in America’s schooling enhances students knowledge,and shape them, it keeps them in a box, and limits their choices and freedom as individuals. He believes that if children are taught both the culture that they live in, and the culture they grew up with, it provides them the best opportunities they need to survive in a society that is opposite of what they grew up with, and gives them a better chance in succeeding and reaching a greater academic achievement. He says we need to get out of the mindset that other cultures have provided so little for us, and portray the standard, priviliged, upper-class, European man, and show gratitude to those who have contributed to the cultural and historical development of Western society. anD Educate children that education is socially constructed, and is constantly updated, debated about, and reformed. And instead of keeping multiculturism out of the classroom, it should be experience full inclusion just as Western traditions do. Banks informs people that the purpose of promoting multiculturism is to reduce the gaps caused by race, class, and gender divisions. He also states that students who have opposite culture of the mainstream culture are forced to question, experience, and face their own cultural beliefs. While students who were grew in the mainstream culture rarely will have these opportunities.
