Childhood obesity is a growing problem in the United States. Obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in teenagers over the past thirty years. Obesity can cause many health issues and can prove to be hard on the self-esteem of young children. There are many ways that childhood obesity can be prevented and reduced in the United States.
There are many reasons why childhood obesity is growing in America. One reason that obesity is on the rise may be due to the fact that people now live in a technological based world. Many children would much rather play a video game than go outside to play. Another reason that obesity is a growing problem is due to the fact that kids are eating unhealthier than they ever have before. Parents feel the need to make quick meals, and quick meals are most of the time not the healthiest. Fast food and other prepackaged meals are full of preservatives. While some cases of childhood obesity are caused by genetics, many of them can be easily prevented. One effect that childhood obesity can cause is type two diabetes. While diabetes is a displeasure in itself, it can lead to many other future health complications. Another problem that obesity can cause is high cholesterol and blood pressure. These can cause a heart attack or a stroke later in life. In addition, obesity can contribute to the cause of sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder where a person's breathing starts and stops repeatedly as he or she sleeps. If left untreated, this condition can prove to be very serious. These disorders can all be prevented or controlled if a person takes early action to create a healthier lifestyle for their
