The Great Gatsby is a story told by a Midwesterner named Nick Carraway who rents a small house in West Egg on Long Island. His house is nearby Jay Gatsby’s vast mansion. On the other hand, his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom Buchanan, an acquaintance of Nick’s from Yale, live in a more fashionable East Egg. After attending one of Gatsby’s famous parties, Nick becomes curious about him. Nick soon discovers that Gatsby is in love with Daisy. Once, Tom takes Nick for a day around the city, where Nick learns that Tom has a kept woman named Myrtle, wife of George Wilson, who is a mechanic by profession.
During one of the parties, Gatsby gets to know Jordan Baker, a professional golfer, through whom he sends a message to Nick insisting to arrange a meeting between him and Daisy. Nick learns that Gatsby and Daisy had once been in love, but couldn’t marry Daisy as he was not very well off and left for the war. Daisy claims to love both of them, but she decides to return to Long Island with Gatsby, not her husband.
