In response to Americans working less, writer Richard Schiffman argues that the importance of spending time with your family and friends, working less, and taking care of your personal needs, need to come before working all day and then bringing home more work to stress yourself over. Schiffman builds his argument by using anecdotes and a pathological stand point. Schiffman brought us how the 40-hour-work-week act was put into place so that when employees would work over their 40 hour work week they weren’t working for free they could still provide an income for their families working more. Schiffman also explained in his argument how in the Civil War times to the end of the Great Depression they were in support of the shorter hour work weeks but the country wasn't financially independent enough to be able to provide workers with that privilege. Shiffman explained “ A wide scale reduction in work hours would spread out the national workload and help to make more jobs available for the unemployed.” Schiffman also goes on to explain how a study was done on pilot program on how they would rather work less hours and get payed less and work less hours. “...a pilot program in Utah found 82 percent of state workers surveyed said that they liked the change and wanted to stick with it.” Schiffman wanted to show that there had been experiments and studies on this topic and proven that it was effective as well as the people enjoyed it
