Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to provide an opportunity to learn about my philosophy of education. There are also details regarding my mission in utilizing reading and literacy in an English as a Second Language classroom. There is also my understanding of how culture plays a role in E.S.L. students, what Alphabetic Principle is and how it affects these students, the purpose of fluency is, and why reading comprehension is of vital importance. I teach students of all ages, this year, I am focusing on my experiences working with high school students.

It is important that I focus on the four major domains that all L2 students are to learn by the time they either age out or successfully obtain a six across these domains with the Access Test. With regards to reading, it is important to recognize that students who come to the United States from another country may not have the same type of reading skills that their L1 counterparts have and thus, it is important that we keep the reading to the skill set that the student may already have. With regards to writing, different cultures write in different ways, and as educators we must heed this understanding so that we can explain to students how best to address what skills they already have or what skills may be lacking. If a child does not know how to read, it will be difficult and a challenge for that student to progress through school. The most important thing we have to do as educators is to empathize with our students. Many of us know what it is like to be in a place where we do not know something, but we must take the time to understand where the student comes from both on an academic and psychological level. If we are to implement this empathy, it is important that any future school I attend experiences cultural awareness. We should develop a program that is beneficial to every student, not just those who are in the E.S.L.
